All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, we may receive compensation from retailers and/or from purchases of products through these links.

If Allure threw a party at Studio 54 in 1979, the room would be filled with ’70s makeup trends like glittery eye shadows, bushy natural brows, and graphic white eyeliner. (Bianca Jagger would have been invited, but we’d ask her to leave her white horse at home.) If we threw that same party again in 2025, we’d expect to see some familiar looks in the room.

The ’70s brought us disco, the women’s liberation movement, and Charlie’s Angels, so it’s only fitting that this groovy era would have spawned beauty trends that could still hold their own on TikTok. Would-be Fleetwood Mac groupies will relish in bare skin and thick, natural brows. Clubgoers will love bringing back glitter and spiked lower lashes. And Farrah Fawcett herself would approve of the pastel eye shadows and dewy foundation.

To help us bring these trends into 2025, we asked the pros to break down the best ’70s makeup trends and the must-have products to get the look.

    Flushed cheeks

It’s not just any blush. It’s blushy blush—the kind of color you’d get after drinking a Harvey Wallbanger and a few hours on the dance floor. “It gives a youthful, healthy appearance, and it’s perfect for adding some character to your makeup without having to learn any precise technique,” says makeup artist Michael Anthony, who likes a buildable cream blush for this look. “It's easier to add more blush than to take it away, so start with a small amount and build up the color gradually until you achieve your desired intensity,” he says. “Focus on the upper mid-face and across the bridge of the nose.”

Anthony likes YSL Make Me Blush Blurring Liquid Blush, a super-pigmented and blendable formula that he recommends building up with a sponge or your fingers. Pinky Nude is the same natural color you’d get from a night of heavy disco.

He also recommends Rhode Pocket Blush, a silky stick with hydrating ingredients like peptides and tamanu oil. We like Spicy Marg, which is a bit punchy for more of a head-turning flush.

    Pearly shadow

Iris Law with white pearly eyeshadow and glossed lipsInstagram/@irislawfall makeup trends long lashesGetty Images

Shimmery, pearly lids are in the flower child starter kit (with long, wavy hair, micro braids, and a flower crown). While an allover wash of frost is a quick and easy way to get the look, makeup artist Jenny Patinkin also likes just a bit of light-catching shadow in the corners of the eyes or along the lower lash line for a more subtle touch.

The R.E.M. Beauty Midnight Shadows Lustrous Liquid Shadow in Lab Coat is the perfect frosty shadow and can be blended over the lid with your finger. And the Makeup By Mario Master Crystal Reflector powder shadow in Quartz will still give that summer-of-love magic, but it's a bit easier to control than a liquid. If you want more, you can always add it. Patinkin recommends applying the shadow before your undereye concealer, in case any shimmer sprinkles onto your cheeks during application.

    Crease shadow

Yara Shahidi with blue and burgundy crease eyeshadow trendGetty ImagesBella Poarch with neutral brown crease shadow and glossed lipsGetty Images

“Unblended crease liner was the [’70s] precursor to the cut-crease trend,” says Patinkin. To get the look, apply a swipe of deeply pigmented shadow in the socket and resist the urge to blend the edges. Then choose color number two and apply it just to the lid. The result has a groovy, two-tone effect with lots of depth.

A pre-paired shadow duo will help take the guesswork out of mixing and matching colors. We like Nars Cosmetics Duo Eyeshadow in Kuala Lampur (a deep berry) in the crease and a shimmery rose gold on the lid.

Metallic shadows give more of a ’70s Bond girl look. Any two shadows in the Divine Bronze Luxe Quad: Venusian Sunrise—a bronzy quad palette—would give femme fatale. For the most contrast, try the dark brown in the crease and a wash of ivory below.

    Blue eye shadow

spring 2025 makeup trends blue eye shadow on modelLaunchmetricsSommer Ray with light blue eyeshadow and blue cut creaseGetty Images

Says makeup artist Natalie Dresher, “Blue eye shadow gives chic PanAm flight attendant,” a glamorous, pond-hopping dream job in the ’70s. (The haul from London to Cozamel is always sexier with a chilled cocktail in hand.) It also happens to be a cheeky look in 2025, whether you keep it simple with a wash of baby blue or smoke out a swipe of deep blue eyeliner with a matching shadow.

Dresher recommends Stila Stay All Day Smudge and Set Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in Electric Lapis as the base for a nighttime look. Apply along lash lines and use your fingers or a dense shadow brush to diffuse the edges.

Complete the look with a similar rock ’n’ roll blue eye shadow like the Diorshow Mono Couleur in Blue Bayadère. And, if you want to redirect that PanAm flight into outer space, add a prismatic eye gloss for a look with even more shine.

    Thick eyeliner

Vanessa Hudgens with thick black cat eyeliner and slicked back bunGetty Imagesfall 2025 makeup trends smudged linerGetty Images70s makeup inspiration thick eyelinerGetty Images

Seventies-era Cher would never turn her nose up at an eyeliner moment, and in 2025, neither should you. Patinkin recommends sketching your desired shape with an eye pencil before going all-in with pigment. It will save you some serious heartache if you mess up.

The Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Waterline Eyeliner Pencil glides on easily and stays put for hours, which is essential considering the thickness of your lines. Once the shape is in place, fill in the gaps with the Armani Beauty Eye Tint Long-Lasting Liquid Eyeshadow in Ebony. The applicator has a sharp precision tip, but you could also use a smudge brush if you have more real estate to cover.

    Monochromatic makeup

Ariana Grande hair color summer 2025 hair trendsGetty Images

Though the ’70s brought us a wide variety of makeup looks, they pretty much fell into one of two distinct vibes: the sparkle and excess of disco (your Donna Summers and Chaka Khans) or beachy Endless Summer (where you’d find your Goldie Hawns and Jaclyn Smiths). For the latter, simple, monochromatic makeup was key to looking youthful, natural, and sweet, like you were born on a beach and never left. It’s an easy trend to do in 2025: Look for multisticks that you can use on your lips, cheeks, and eyes, and use your hands to apply and blend.

If you could look up the perfect beach babe pink in the dictionary, Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in Coquette would be pictured. The multistick looks great on the cheeks and lips with just a swipe or two of mascara to top it off.

Ilia Multi-Stick's hydrating formula is especially great for sensitive skin (thanks to avocado oil and shea butter) and comes in a few colorways that would bring the ’70s into 2025. A Fine Romance is great for a deeper, sexier flush, and Dear Ruby makes for something more cheerful.

    Frosted lips

Amanda Gorman with pink frosted lips trend and cateye eyelinerGetty Images

Imagine being at the state fair with a swirl of cotton candy on a stick. If you just barely pressed your lips to the spun sugar, you might come away with that same sparkly, frosted, baby-pink color on your mouth. Luckily, Dresher says this ’70s look is trending in 2025, and you can buy it in a tube. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in $weetmouth is a dead ringer for the confection.

    Freckles

Willow Smith with gold eye shadow and frecklesGetty Imagesfaux freckles on model summer makeup trends 2025Launchmetrics

If your ’70s vibe is more “Summer Breeze” than “Saturday Night Fever,” a smattering of freckles across bare skin is all you need. Unfortunately, not all of us have been blessed with such natural cuteness, but there are ways to fake it (or even add more to your existing collection).

Freck OG is just subtle enough to tickle your nose with specks (too dark and it’ll look like your mascara exploded on your face). You can use a brown liquid (like this one in Big Truffle) or gel eyeliner to get the same freckle-smattered effect. A harder pencil will create uniform dots that won’t look natural.

    Statement lower lashes

Ivy Getty with a braided ponytail orange red lipstick and statement lower lashes '70s makeup trendGetty ImagesSydney Sweeney blonde hair spring 2025 hair color trendsGetty Images

If your upper lashes are the lead single on the album, your lower lashes are the underrated B-side. We often overlook them, but they’re sometimes even sexier than the hits. To get Ivy Getty’s ’70s Cher-inspired lashes, Patinkin recommends starting with a tubing mascara to avoid a wet, clumpy mess. "Point the applicator at a perpendicular angle to the eye and swipe mascara back and forth over the lower lash line," she says. If you want an even more dramatic spike, Patinkin recommends using small tweezers to pinch sections of lashes together into little packets of spikes.

“Caliray’s mascara works well for this look because you can control the application without getting big, wet blobs,” says Patinkin. “I find that it doesn’t flake off throughout the day.” Some of us don’t have the patience to flip the record over for the B-side (isn’t that what Spotify is for?) If that’s you, a pre-spiked lower lash strip will save you the time and effort.

    White eyeliner

sophie thatcher haircut summer hair trends 2025Getty ImagesJanelle Monae in a black hat with white negative space eyeliner '70s makeup trendGetty Images

Nothing pairs with a pair of bell-bottoms quite like cheeky white eyeliner. "Even the slightest bit can be so impactful when strategically placed," says makeup artist Kristine Studden. Line the inner corner of the eye to widen, the water line to open it up, create a white flick for a wink of fun, or try a negative-space liner for something graphic like Janelle Monáe. "The options are endless," says Studden.

Studden likes this trusty MAC liner in Pure White. "The color is really rich and pigmented, so it pops off the skin," she says. A pencil works especially well for inner corners and water lines. If you’re looking to create a sharp flick or play with more abstract shapes, a crisp liquid liner pen will glide on more easily. Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner is a fan favorite.

    Soft pink lips

Samara Weaving midi haircut summer hair trends 2025Getty Images

Every decade has its own pink. The ‘50s were filled with baby pink poodle skirts. The ’80s were all about neon. Millennials even have their own chewed-bubblegum pink. In the ’70s, pink was a soft, satiny, almost-nude shade. Charlie’s Angels pink. "Blow a kiss and beat the bad guys" pink. A ’70s pink lip is the perfect trend to bring into 2025 because there’s a hue for every skin tone. Not sure which pink is right for you? Reach for a color-changing balm (like Prada Balm in Astral Pink) that changes with your lips' pH.

    Pastel eye shadow

Suki Waterhouse in a green dress with lavender pastel eyeshadow '70s makeup trendGetty Imagesmodel with light blue eye shadow at Luisa Beccaria Spring 2025Getty Imagesspring 2025 makeup trends pink pastel eye makeup on modelLaunchmetrics

Somewhere during our Palm Royale binge watch, we developed a hankering for poolside vacations and pastel eye shadow. The Palm Springs vacation is pretty pricey, so we’re sticking with the sugar-sweet color wash shadow trend in light blues, lavenders, and pinks. (Pair this trend with the pink lips from above, and Charlie will make you an honorary Angel.)

Pastels, by nature, tend to disappear into the skin. To give the color some punch, Carrillo says start by covering the lids with a white primer or eyeliner. Then, pack on your eye shadow. This e.l.f. palette hits all the trendy ’70s hues—denim blue, lilac, sage, and then some.

    Dewy foundation

kim kardashian fresh skin nomakeup makeupGetty Imagesspring 2025 makeup trends fresh skin at Prabal GurungLaunchmetrics

Foundation in the ’70s was hydrated and dewy, like you had just spent the afternoon at the roller rink and had a light glisten going. You know, the sexy kind. Not the drenched-in-sweat kind. "Dewy is and forever will be the fountain of youth," says Carrillo, who adds that a damp Beautyblender will help to keep things light.

Carrillo applies a buildable foundation with a "gorgeous sheen" on the face, ears, neck, and décolleté. For an extra “ABBA just came on and I hit the rink hard glow,” dab this shimmer-free highlighter along the cheekbones for a touch of sweet dewiness.

    Bushy brows

vanessa kirby with long wavy blonde hair and bushy brows '70s makeup trendGetty ImagesMargaret Qualley side part hairstyle summer hair trends 2025Getty Images

The "’70s bush" wasn’t a term coined for brows, but a bushy brow has ’70s free-spirit energy. In 2025, we curate where they land a bit more. "Just brush your brows lightly into place with gel," says Patinkin. “Step away from the tweezers.”

Patinkin highly recommends this clear brow gel. "It gives great hold without drying stiff or crispy," she says. If your brows are a lighter color or even just a little sparse, a saturated tinted brow gel like Glossier’s Boy Brow will help to give a bushier look without having to painstakingly paint on individual hairs.

    Bronzed skin

Jennifer Lopez hair color summer 2025 hair trendsGetty Images

The very first Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue was printed in 1964. By the 1970s, the special edition was already a cultural phenomenon with icons like Cheryl Tiegs and Christie Brinkley gracing the cover. Many turned to tanning beds and SPF-less tanning oil to get that sandy, ’70s surfer look. We’re a lot smarter now about achieving our beach babe aesthetic. "I love a bronzed look, but only when it’s from a bottle and it mimics the look of tanned skin with products that add that bronzy glow," says makeup artist Dani Kimiko Vincent.

This gradual tanning lotion has won Allure’s Readers' Choice Award for self-tanner many, many times over, thanks to ease of application (no gloves required). For the face, Vincent recommends this moisturizing tint, "which can be used alone or mixed into your moisturizer or SPF for some added glow."

    Glossy lips

hailey bieber with glossy lips and bob haircutGetty Imagesmegan thee stallion lip combo and winged eyeliner at 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar After PartyGetty Imagesglossy lips on model summer makeup trends 2025Launchmetrics

"I love the playfulness of the ’70s sheer lip gloss look," says Vincent. "It’s fun, carefree, youthful, and refreshing," like driving a Firebird with the windows down and Electric Light Orchestra on the radio. Vincent recommends reaching for a simple gloss or lip oil, but prep for this trend will go a long way. “As with any lip product application, it begins with exfoliated lips so there are no snags in the finish.”

Vincent likes the Dior Lip Glow Oil, a glassy, thick gloss that comes in several nude and sheer shades with a touch of shimmer. "These lip oils are nonsticky and have a rich, balmy texture," says Vincent. "I love the mirror gloss shine and the lip-caring formula," which includes nourishing cherry oil.

    Bare skin

Alicia Keys with bare skin natural wedding makeup trendGetty Imagesspring 2025 makeup trends fresh skin at Prabal GurungLaunchmetrics

If Janis Joplin wrote for Allure, she’d be singing the praises of beautiful bare skin. Patinkin agrees, but understands you might have a few spots you want to hide. "Bare skin that gets just a little touch-up with concealer is a great way to balance wanting to look 'perfect' and wanting to look natural," she says. “I like to apply a creamy concealer under the eyes, around the nose, and on the chin.”

If you’re going Janis Joplin bare, all you need is a nourishing moisturizer. Studden likes the dewy shine of Creme de La Mer, either all over or used as a highlighting sheen on the cheekbones.

For a more accessible option, try this juicy, hydrating moisturizer with squalane that provides all-day hydration. If you do want to do a minor touch-up, Patinkin recommends this hydrating concealer. "It wears on the skin so nicely but still has nice coverage," she says.

    Disco eyes

Ava Max in a white dress with silver glitter disco eyeshadow '70s makeup trendGetty Images

If you’re looking for late-night dancing at Studio 54, glittery, shimmery disco eyes are the price of admission. "To get the look at home, finish off your eye shadow by using your finger to place a fine glitter or shimmer over the entire lid, working your way to the outer corners of the shadow," says Vincent. If you want to go all-in on glitter coat your lids with Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Flakes.

    Bold on bold

Lady Gaga in a sheer black dress with orange red lipstick and bold black smokey eye '70s makeup trendGetty ImagesA model at the Moschino RTW SpringSummer 2023 fashion show with bold eyes and bold lips '70s makeup trendGetty Images

If a statement lip is Marilyn Monroe and a statement eye is Sophia Loren, a statement lip and a statement eye together is ’70s Diana Ross. Today, bold on bold is an even more heightened version of Diana’s look—try an orange-red lip and a smoked-out cat eye in a color of your choice. "It's just makeup. It should be fun," says Studden. If this all feels like a lot, Carrillo recommends sticking to berry tones. "Using plums and cranberries is just as dramatic as a blue eye shadow and orange lip," he says.

Studden recommends the Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner in a wearable color like Smoky Quartz if you’re just dipping your toes into the bold-on-bold trend, or opt for “a fun, bright tone like Sequin Green.” Find a complementary lipstick color in a slick satin finish. We like Charlotte Tilbury's K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick in Tell Laura, a punchy, orange-red shade like Lady Gaga's.

    Cut-crease liner

Olivia Rodrigo with high ponytail and black cut crease liner '70s makeup trendGetty Images

Early ’70s Twiggy made us rethink the shape of our eyeliner, and in 2025, her legacy is still seen in our youngest, freshest superstars (Olivia Rodrigo is the patron saint of Gen Z, after all). Cut-crease liner also boasts a little function with its stylish form: "One of the amazing things is it really can reshape an eye," says Carrillo. “If you have a monolid or a hooded lid, it can help to bring back depth.”

Carrillo recommends using the curve of an eyelash curler to trace your cut crease. "Kevyn Aucoin’s eyelash curler is amazing while you’re at it," he says. Because if you’re buying one for a cut crease, you may as well buy one that's great for curling lashes, too. As for your liner, we recommend the Best of Beauty-winning Lisa Eldridge Kitten Flick Liquid Liner, which has an extra-fine tip that helps create crisp lines.

The best cream blushes are your cheat code for a fresh, healthy-looking glow in an instant—just dab, blend, and go. Unlike most powders, these buttery cheek tints add a radiant sheen to skin that mimics the effects of an hour-long jog on the beach or a luxurious facial. On top of their dewy finishes, cream blushes tend to be more buildable (read: forgiving) than powder or liquid variations—so, if you suffer from blush blindness, a cream-based option is your key to a more natural effect. Curious to know which ones made the Allure cut? Keep scrolling to shop the cream blushes that have stolen our hearts (and our shelf space).

This 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner melts into skin with the tip of a finger, builds easily, and comes in 12 shades that deliver that just-right flush on cheeks, lids, or lips—hence the name. First launched in 1996, this icon has been revamped nearly three decades later with a new, skin-loving formula powered by nourishing peach kernel oil, antioxidant-rich rhubarb fruit extract, and soft-focus blurring powders. The result is a blurred finish that feels lighter, blends smoother, and packs more pigment—earning it our top overall spot.

“A Nars Multiple is one of the first beauty products I ever bought back when I invented being a Sephora teen in 2010. It cost at least a few evenings of babysitting and I was so excited about it I kept the box for months—I'm not kidding. The recent reformulation is everything a nostalgic shopper like me could want. It's the same buttery texture I remember, but now it's even more blendable, silkier, and glowier. I'm not sure how it manages to be the perfect texture and shade for both lips and cheeks, but the cosmetic chemists at Nars cooked up something truly special here.” —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

"I'm pretty heavy-handed with my blush (not necessarily a bad thing) but I appreciate how truly buildable this Chanel formula is. Despite how intense the color looks in the pan, it applies sheerer than one'd expect (even with a relatively dense brush), so I can build it up to my desired level and not risk looking more sunburnt than sun-kissed. It's also sheerer in comparison to other cream blushes but you can still go brush-less and pick up pigment by swirling your fingers into it. True to its name, it leaves behind a powdery, weightless veil. It's not the most long-lasting on its own, so I'd wouldn't skip primer when using this." —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: Danessa Myricks Beauty's Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed is a follow-up to the brand's Best of Beauty Award-winning balm-to-powder foundation, so it's a given that we'd love this blush at first swipe. Just like its predecessor, this formula applies like a creamy balm and dries down to a powder-like matte texture, allowing for a more natural-looking flush. (We found that it works best applied with a brush instead of your fingertips, however, since it dries down pretty quickly.) The seven shades also deserve a shoutout for their vibrant pigments, which can be blended out for subtlety or layered for a more dramatic effect.

"I was wowed at the amount of pigment I got from just a few taps in the blush pan and how it played with my foundation and concealer to create a seamless blend. Also, as pigmented as the blush is, it's not overwhelming. You can build it up for a bold flush of color or just add a subtle tinge of rosiness to the cheeks, which is what I like to do. Sometimes I’ll apply it as a finishing touch to reinforce my initial cream blush. Other times I’ll use it as my sole blush, applying it once after concealer as a cream blush then again when my face is near complete as a powder blush."—Annie Blay-Tettey, associate beauty editor

Why it's worth it: If there's one blush that's taken over just about every Allure editor's cheeks, it's the TikTok-viral Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Matte Beauty Blush Wand. Unlike many of the ultra-dewy blushes on the market, this one has a mattifying finish and a formula that's spiked with radiance-boosting silica spheres for a skin-like effect.

Tilbury told us that you should apply it to the tops of your cheekbones to lift the face. "Never start too low," she said. “It pulls your cheeks down.” During testing, we were struck by how much punch this formula packs in just one tap. The cushion-tip applicator is a standout—it delivers the perfect dose of pigment exactly where you want it, so there’s no guesswork. You can dot on a single tap for a soft wash of color or build it up with a few more for extra brightness. Then simply blend it out with a brush or your fingers.

"When I want a blush that’s going to melt right onto my skin, I reach for the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Beauty Blush Wand in Pillow Talk Pink Pop. Although it’s a matte formula, it plays well with creamy base products, blending easily to give me a pink-peachy glow."—Kara McGrath, content director

Why it’s worth it: The Summer Fridays Blush Butter Balm’s creamy formula is a dream on dry skin, as it leaves your complexion looking and feeling hydrated. How? It’s loaded with skin care-forward ingredients like plumping peptides, hydrating hyaluronic acid, and moisturizing shea butter. It imparts a fresh, dewy glow, like you spent just the right amount of time in the sun (whatever that might look like for you). Thanks to its flexible formula, you can build it up or sheer it out easily. And, as with many cream blushes on this list, this one looks just as good on the lips if you're into the monochromatic look.

"It is so rare for me to hit the pan for a blush, but I SCRAPE the beautiful bits of this blush when I get down to the end. I use this for everything and everywhere—of course as a subtle flush or wow-worthy pop of color on the cheeks, over the nose for a cute sunkissed look, and on the eyes for some pigment. One thing that may be underrated for this blush is that it is so, so great on the lips as well. I use a liner and the blush, and I'm set; it's multipurpose in the best way. I have eczema-laden skin, and it hasn't flared up over many months of use, it also doesn't accentuate any dry spots, and instead leaves the skin with a healthy, bouncy-looking finish.

This formula melts into the fingers and onto the skin, so you don't need to tug to get it to blend. It's simultaneously buildable and forgivable if you add too much. The shade range is great (Terracotta is my all-time favorite for my medium skin), and while you can use your fingers, I highly recommend the corresponding dual-ended brush—it is so versatile and even blends skin tint foundations like a dream." —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

Why it’s worth it: We at Allure are never shy about a little radiance, which is why Basma’s The Cream Blush is a consistent editor favorite. Created by Rokael Lizama, makeup artist to Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, and other red-carpet regulars, the formula is as versatile as it is flattering. It melts into skin seamlessly (even over powder), delivers a radiant finish without the sticky aftermath, and stays put from morning meetings to wedding toasts to actual red carpets. Credit for that lit-from-within effect goes to its ingredient lineup: soothing aloe vera for a cooling burst, apricot and avocado oils to lock in hydration, and rosemary extract for an antioxidant boost. The end result: A glow that feels as good as it looks.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is cream blush better than powder blush?

It's up to you, as cream and powder blush formulas both have their time and place. That said, cream blushes usually contain conditioning oils, making them more moisturizing than their powdery counterparts (take note, dry skin types). They also won't highlight textured areas of the skin or crease in wrinkles like powder blushes can, making them great for mature skin types. While liquid blushes provide similar effects, creams are more buildable, with sheer-to-medium coverage that isn’t as dramatically pigmented as liquids often are.

How should I apply cream blush?

First, finding a complementary shade to your skin tone is key for a natural-looking finish. As a rule of thumb, Los Angeles-based makeup artist Carissa Ferreri previously told Allure that she recommends using a cream blush (or gel) formula in rosy tones. Once you find your shade, it's time to dab it on. "Focus the blush a bit higher on the cheeks, like right under the eyes, and then diffuse any harsh lines," she explained. Joseph Carrillo, a makeup artist based in New York City, also suggests "smiling and applying the color in the center of the apples" before gently fading the edges.

While some come in stick form and others in pots, it's the same deal: Simply apply straight from the bullet and blend the product out with your fingers, a beauty sponge, or a stippling blush brush for more precision. Whatever you do, it's hard to mess up, especially considering most cream blushes are on the sheerer (but buildable) side. If you've gone overboard with the intensity, you can always use your brush or sponge to diffuse the color.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best cream blushes, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and professional makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product’s performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we can fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Don't get us wrong, we love a full-coverage moment—but the best skin tints are even better bets for a year-round glow without the heavy feel that often accompanies foundation. Instead, skin tints boast supremely lightweight textures, easy-on-pores formulations, and sheer yet buildable coverage, and they tend to treat your skin to nourishing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, squalane, and niacinamide, too.

Plus, many formulas on the market feature SPF—and while a skin tint with SPF shouldn't replace a standalone sunscreen (unless it has SPF 30 or higher), we always welcome extra UV protection. So, without further ado, these are the very best skin tints approved by editors and board-certified dermatologists to perfect your no-makeup-makeup look.

Why it’s worth it: Make Up For Ever’s Super Boost Lightweight Moisturizing Skin Tint’s skin care-forward formula makes it our go-to lightweight complexion product. It’s loaded with polyglutamic and hyaluronic acids to hydrate and plump the skin, while grapefruit extract brightens and exfoliates via its natural alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). The coverage? Just enough to take down redness and blur uneven spots, but sheer enough to let your skin still look like…well, skin. (Just tap it on with fingers for that barely-there, melted-in finish.) And, because it’s buildable without ever getting greasy, you can layer it on the days you need a little extra backup. We wish the shade range was a bit wider, but thanks to its sheer finish, each shade flexes across multiple skin tones.

"After trekking through the city on a hot summer day, my skin still looked hydrated and non-oily by the time I returned home," Kassidy Silva, Allure social director, notes. Summer Fridays debuted as a skin-care brand, so it's no surprise that the brand's skin tint serves up some familiar skin-loving ingredients, including glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and squalane to lock in moisture. Those with sensitive skin will appreciate the addition of tiger grass to soothe skin and reduce the look of redness.

“Not a day goes by that I don't use this skin tint—it truly is the ‘your skin but better’ formula in a bottle. Despite being super dry, consistently battling hormonal acne, and having a mix of deep and fine lines, this skin tint is undetectable! No settling into creases, no weird ashiness in the pigment, no accentuating my eczema patches—just a perfect weightless wear. The shade ranges are uniquely fitting; I'm Shade 5, which is ‘medium with warm neutral undertones’—do you know how rare it is to find a combination like this?! You do if you have a tricky medium skintone that's all at once golden, warm, and olive. It's a borderline magical product. The only drawback is that it's a liquid, so sometimes you may spill if you're in a rush (hi, mom of two and perpetually late to things). It has stained a top of mine, but, hey, that's some good staying-power for you!” —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

It comes in 15 shades and is basically built to keep up with your day, wherever that might take you.

Best Blurring: Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint Blurring Elixir

Allure creative producer Sydney Malone applying the Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint Blurring Elixir

    Sydney Malone

Why it's worth it: During Best of Beauty testing, our team unanimously swooned over Kylie Cosmetics’ Skin Tint Blurring Elixir. We're mega fans of the soft-focus blur it creates on skin, thanks to silica and mica powders that reflect light and smooth texture. The formula also has impressive pigment, a hydrating hit of hyaluronic acid, and 24 flexible shades that range from deep dark to ultra-fair. We wore it through sweltering New York City days, and instead of melting into a cakey, greasy mess, it stayed smooth and airbrushed, while still letting skin breathe.

Why it's worth it: Victoria Beckham teamed up with skin-care powerhouse Augustinus Bader—famed for its patented TFC8 technology—for her first-ever Foundation Drops. At the core is Bader’s signature complex of vitamins, lipids, and peptides, the same one behind the brand’s award-winning creams that, according to the company, can boost hydration in just 12 hours and visibly improve elasticity and fine lines within six weeks. True to Beckham’s your-skin-but-better ethos, the formula enhances rather than masks. It’s also spiked with olive leaf extract to help soften wrinkles, jojoba oil to calm redness, and echinacea to plump and smooth. The result: a serum-like foundation with light-to-medium coverage that feels featherlight, won’t crease or cake, and leaves skin with a hydrated, healthy glow that only improves over time.

This formula is an absolute dream for my dry skin, fine lines, and hormonal acne. It  smooths, blurs, and provides enough coverage that you look like you've applied the Paris filter to your face while wearing nothing at all. It's the opposite of cakey, and doesn't crease—even in my deeper forehead lines. These foundation drops are supremely lightweight, have a familiar scent (much like Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint, presumably thanks to the mineral ingredients in it), and while it's pricey compared to my usual products that are half the price, a little goes a long way. The formula floods the skin with even coverage and dries down to a healthy, hydrated glow. On top of that, as I age (rapidly, thanks to two kids with apparently no need for sleep), I love that there's some Augustinus Bader-powered skincare infused in the product. Am I expecting it to work like SkinCeuticals' P-Tiox? No, but I love that it's oriented like skincare, rather than detracting from my routine. It's non-comedogenic, which is so important to me in tints and foundations, since my skin is so prone to break-outs. One thing to note: Like many foundations, the color may appear a little strong at first, but it dries down to a beautiful, natural finish. I'm a perfect match for Medium, which has lovely golden undertones. —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between foundation and skin tint?

Foundations and skin tints mainly differ in both pigment levels and their skin-care perks. Foundations deliver more coverage, but that extra pigment can often feel heavy—and powders in the formula may settle into fine lines. (That’s why it’s all the more important to find a foundation made for mature skin.)

Skin tints, on the other hand, often come loaded with nourishing ingredients you won’t always find in standard foundation or concealer (more on that below). Their lighter, more hydrating formulas make them a particularly good fit for dry or mature skin.

That's not to say the two base products can't work in tandem. "I can easily see myself using a tint as a priming step to even the skin, and adding coverage with foundation and concealer where needed," makeup artist Tommy Napoli told Allure. In the case of fuller coverage, a translucent setting powder is crucial to lock everything in place and minimize shine.

What ingredients should I look for in a skin tint?

When something is advertised as a skin tint, you may see more skin-loving actives like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and squalane at work. "[Hyaluronic acid] is great at holding water and giving skin resilience and firmness," New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Doris Day, MD, previously told Allure. Squalane, conversely, "aids in skin-care problems wherein the skin barrier is disrupted and transepidermal water loss is an issue," according to Florida-based board-certified dermatologist Samantha Fisher, MD. Everyone, including sensitive skin (squalane is odorless, by the way), can benefit from this emollient.

While examining the formula of Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint, Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, shouted out some of her favorite skin tint ingredients. "Niacinamide brightens tone and increases the skin's production of ceramides, which in turn can prevent moisture loss," explained Dr. King. She also named mineral SPFs, like non-nano zinc oxide, as a beneficial ingredient—but we always recommend applying a standalone sunscreen with at least SPF 30 or more, instead of relying on SPF-spiked makeup.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best skin tints, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from makeup artists, dermatologists, and cosmetic chemists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Why it's worth it: The 2024 Best of Beauty-winning Kulfi Beauty Underlined Kajal Eyeliner draws inspiration from kajal—a buttery, richly pigmented eyeliner traditionally cooked up with natural ingredients in kitchens across South Asian households and worn for centuries to ward off the evil eye. Kulfi brings the practice into the present day with this smudge-proof color that glides skillfully onto lids and waterlines. You get a solid 20 seconds of easy-blending playtime before it sets firmly in place. Makeup artist Amrita Mehta is among its many fans, giving kudos to the vibrant shades ideal for tightlining or "smudging out into an all-over color or smoky eye look."

"My days of thick, forgiving winged eyeliner are long behind me, so I'm all about precision and control with my eyeliner formulas these days. Chanel's Le Liner de Chanel has a fine tip applicator that's quite stiff compared to others I've tried, which I find to be ideal for keeping my lines tight and clean. The formula is definitely a liquid but not so loose that it's runny and stressful—I love dragging my fingertip along the outer wing to slightly soften the tip—and this eyeliner has just enough viscosity that I can safely manipulate the wing with my fingers without fear that I'm going to end up with inky fingerprints all over my face. You can do a lot with this eyeliner which really helps justify the price tag, IMO."—Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

“It took less than 15-minutes with Mario Dedivanovic to convince me to start wearing eyeliner again. After forgoing the product for years since it took too much time and gave me anxiety to get my lines even, I picked up the Master Pigment Pro liner and it's been a match made in eyeliner heaven. Plus, the pencil is ideal for beginners as the dual-tip pencil comes with a brush to smooth out any rough spots.

I start by tightlining my upper waterline and using a q-tip to clean up an excess on my lower line. Then I slowly begin lining my upper lid from the outer corner and working my way to mid-lash. Using the brush, I smooth out my inevitable bumps and continue to layer and blend until I have the color I'm happy with. Once I've finished with a strong coat, I apply my shadow and then go back in with the eyeliner once I've finished to beef up the color and definition. In under 10 minutes, I have defined eyes and carry on with my base products.”—Kassidy Silva, social media director

Why it’s worth it: Amid a sea of jet-black liners, we more than appreciate the occasional flare of eye-popping brightness. Valentino's Colorgraph Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil has range, offering vivid pinks and electric purples alongside the can't-go-wrong classic coal. But color is just the start—while you've probably tangoed with plenty of liners sporting built-in spongy smudgers, this dual-ender boasts a tiny, rounded bristle brush for blending with exacto-level precision. Whether doing waterline eyeliner, defining your upper lashes, or blending broad strokes into eyeshadow-esque coverage, this liner is ready to play.

"The easiest way to jazz up my makeup is to go in with a bright gel liner, and Valentino's Colorgraph in Pink PP stole my heart even before I received the sample. It's pigmented and easy-gliding, so I can do each eye in less than 15 seconds, but it dries to a non-budge matte. You do have to sharpen relatively often, but that's just how it goes! If you want shimmer, I like Brown Fondant for a cute everyday brown, or for something bolder, I also like the shimmery Purple Dose." —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: We'll say it with our chests: The gel liner pot-and-brush combo is hugely underrated. Sure, dipping a petite paintbrush into a pot of pigment and wielding it steadily across your lid can seem intimidating, but we promise it's easier (and way more satisfying) than many of its peers. Take the Jones Road Gel Liner, for example. This creamy, richly pigmented, and water-resistant formula is a primo pick for your upper lid, creating crisp, transfer-proof lines wherever you sweep the angled brush. Turn the brush flat-side-down for thick, bold strokes, or use the slender tip for peak precision. Just make sure to screw the cap back on super tightly when you're done—otherwise, it'll dry out and become basically unusable.

The waterproof formula is loaded with vitamin E and jojoba oil, so it stays creamy going on but locks down the second it sets——through humidity, sweat, and a sweaty dance floor. You can smoke it out, wing it sharp, or wear it all over as shadow, and it won’t budge until you decide to take it off. It's flat, saturated with pigment, and encircled by a felt outer that you can rotate to create super-graphic, calligraphic sweeps of black. Or, if you press it flat against your lid, it becomes a geometric stamp for tiny, Twiggy-esque lines beneath your bottom lashes. The formula is in it for the long haul, reliably non-smeary and flake-free. Just give the pen a shake before use and store it cap-side-down so the pigment doesn't dry out.

Why we love it: When it comes to budget-friendly liners, Nyx’s Epic Ink Liner (a 2024 Best of Beauty winner) is our no-brainer pick. Makeup artist Christian Briceno previously told Allure that this liner is bold, smooth, and it actually stays put (we’re talkin’ up to six hours!). The brush tip is precise enough for razor-thin flicks but flexible enough to wing out something dramatic. During testing, we found that it may need a quick touch-up after several hours due to some light flaking, but the formula layers easily without getting clumpy, and the fix takes just seconds. Our editors keep the classic jet black in constant rotation, but the electric blue and peachy pink shades are just as tempting—and at this price, why not grab more than one?

    Frequently Asked Questions

How should I choose an eyeliner?

Choosing the right eyeliner is all about knowing your preferences and considering what role you want it to play in your makeup routine. "I love gel eyeliners because they give you a level of both control and precision that you don't get from liquid liners or traditional pencils," says makeup artist Kasey Spickard. Meanwhile, London-based makeup artist Vincent Ford leans toward waterproof formulas, praising their precision and smudgeless staying power throughout the day. As for liquid liners, Florida-based makeup artist Allison Kaye is partial to inky, felt-tip liners, which she says are "great for delivering consistently opaque pigment with every stroke."

As you weigh your options, look closely at each product's claims. If you live in a humid climate, make sure it says "waterproof" or "water-resistant" on the package. And if your eyes tend to get irritated easily, opt for ophthalmologist-tested formulas. And so on. Finding your go-to liner might involve a little trial and error, but honestly, we think that's half the fun.

    How should I apply eyeliner?

At the end of the day, you should apply your eyeliner however you want to, but if you're after a bit more of a professional approach, there are some guidelines to keep in mind. If you're using an eyeliner pencil, Houston-based makeup artist Rose Siard says: "As soon as you draw your line, start smudging. I work one eye at a time, so I have more blending time." If you're using liquid eyeliner, it's a whole other beautiful beast. We have an entire course on cat-eyes, but if you're after specifics based on your eye shape, here's the handy guide from our waterproof eyeliner roundup, according to Lavonne Wood, a bi-coastal makeup artist:

    Round eyes

If your irises are completely visible when your eyes are open and resting naturally, then you likely have round eyes. "Start from the outside, drawing at a downward angle toward the eye's outer corner," she advises. for this eye shape. “Apply the liner inwards, stopping at the center of your lid where your pupil is when you're looking straight ahead.”

    Monolids

Monolids are characterized by minimal eye creases or the lack of an eye crease. Creating the thinnest line possible is best for this shape, Wood says. “Place the tip of the eyeliner on the lash line at the pupil and draw to the outer corner. Then, start from the inner corner and draw it to meet the middle point.”

    Almond eyes

If your eyes are more ovular than circular and have sharp outer and inner corners, you've got almond-shaped eyes. Wood recommends that you take advantage of your extra lid space. “Draw your eyeliner from the inner corner all the way across the lash line, then flick it out, stopping at the point where your crease starts.”

    Hooded eyes

Do your creases seem to disappear when you open your eyes? That means you've got hooded eyes. "To make sure the liner doesn't disappear under your lid, create the outer wing flick where your eyelid hood starts," Wood advises. "Work your way inward, applying your liner in thin strokes."

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide, inclusive shade range with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is the packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best eyeliners, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete review process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness, a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine, or you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from are folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

About three years ago, the word “exosome” quietly slipped into the skin-care lexicon. Fast forward to 2025, and it’s seemingly everywhere: A press release for a facialist’s spa recently touted its new “exosome dome” (a futuristic rotunda where you can experience exosome therapy). The facialist insists it’s not “your average dome.” And that exosome cream you’re seeing on beauty shelves? It’s supposedly not your average cream.

Scientifically speaking, exosomes are tiny structures released by cells that contain molecules like proteins, lipids, and genetic material. You can think of them as microscopic delivery trucks—bubble-like forms that facilitate communication and coordination between cells by delivering their molecular cargo, says Ellen Marmur, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. Marisa Garshick, MD, another board-certified dermatologist, notes that when this exchange occurs naturally in the body, it facilitates wound healing as well as other forms of cellular repair and regeneration.

The conversation around exosomes and skin initially centered on exosome therapy: an in-office treatment involving the application of topicals containing these tiny structures across the face following microneedling and laser resurfacing. Although there are currently no FDA-approved exosome treatments on the market, JuveXO and Exovex are examples of exosome-infused product lines designed for use in-office after these procedures.

Marnie Nussbaum, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that exosomes have been shown in lab settings to elevate the concentration of growth factors that increase collagen and elastin, leading to improved skin laxity, a reduction in hyperpigmentation, and wound healing. In short, slathering exosomes onto your face after microneedling and lasers may reduce healing time and improve skin quality.

We’re also starting to see the potential use of exosomes in the hair-loss space. “Some people have done studies with exosomes…supplying them directly to an intact scalp and getting hair growth,” says Todd E. Schlesinger, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and co-author of the scientific literature review The Role of Exosomes in Medical Dermatology. But the evidence is still anecdotal. “You’ll find a bit of research here and there—mostly small studies, case reports, or series involving just a few patients.”

So what does that mean for your skin-care routine outside of a doctor’s office? Most products that tout exosomes as an active ingredient are focused on rejuvenation and regeneration, claiming to address visible signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity, but the science to back up these claims is currently lacking, plus there’s no industry standardization or regulation for sourcing or manufacturing exosomes for cosmetic use.

And yet, the hype only continues to grow. So does any of this stuff actually work? Should we be concerned about product safety? And where are companies getting all these exosomes from anyway? We asked dermatologists and cosmetic chemists for their thoughts. Below are our eight biggest takeaways.

    1. Ask 13 dermatologists and chemists about the benefits of exosome skin-care products and you'll get 13 different answers.

When we first started reporting on the role exosomes play in skin care, we received responses couched with phrases like, “They might do this,” or, “I guess, theoretically, they may…”

Dr. Nussbaum hopes that exosomes will enhance the skin repair process. Compared to other topical skin-care ingredients, Dr. Marmur says exosomes might be able to survive longer in the skin’s defensive environment due to their protective structures. Corey L. Hartman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Birmingham, Alabama, is less convinced of their abilities. “I don't even think that exosomes penetrate deep enough to be effective,” he says.

    2. One thing many of them can agree on: Exosome products hit the market way too quickly.

Let’s get this out of the way: No one we spoke to could definitively say that exosome skin-care products work. Dr. Schlesinger says that there are too many unknowns to confidently attribute the benefits seen during use to exosomes in over-the-counter topical skin care. “Everyone in clinical dermatology and research dermatology is saying the same thing: We need the science,” he says. “We're looking to these companies to produce the data.”

“I’d say it feels like the hype outweighs the proven results—maybe about 70% hype and 30% science.”

Dr. Marmur agrees. “On one hand, exosomes do represent a novel and promising approach to skin regeneration,” she says. On the other hand, these launches “have outpaced the science.” She continues, “I’d say it feels like the hype outweighs the proven results—maybe about 70% hype and 30% science.”

    3. The exosomes in your products are typically from three organic sources.

    Humans

Some products are infused with exosomes created from human stem cells or platelets from blood. Dr. Marmur explains that in theory, “human exosomes ‘speak the same language’ as our own cells, making it easier for them to deliver their message and trigger changes like increased collagen or healing.” However, the materials inside exosomes derived from organic sources (like human stem cells) vary depending on the exact source.

One example of a product containing human-derived exosomes is Dr. Barbara Sturm Exoso-Metic Face Serum. These exosomes are lab-engineered from human DNA originally sourced from accredited tissue banks. According to the brand, they’re produced using recombinant protein technology, a process that inserts a targeted human gene into lab-cultured bacteria. After “reading” the DNA, the bacteria produce exosomes, which are then incorporated into the Exoso-Metic products. The end-product contains no original human material.

    Animals

According to Dr. Schlesinger, exosomes are typically derived from humans and plants. However, some products utilize exosomes derived from animal blood plasma. “I know there are some companies looking at canine exosomes,” says Dr. Schlesinger. As with pretty much any product that contains animal-derived ingredients, this raises a host of questions about the animals’ welfare and whether these exosomes are ethical to use.

Some brands use animal byproducts. For example, Beekman 1802’s Milk Rx Advanced Better Aging Cream uses exosomes derived from goat milk proteins, collected from the goats raised on their farm. You can take a peek at how they're being treated here.

    Plants

Many of these products use exosomes from plants. Kelly Dobos, a cosmetic chemist and adjunct professor of cosmetic science at the University of Cincinnati, notes that plant-based exosomes may offer benefits like lower production costs, longer shelf life, and fewer regulatory hurdles. Some experts also suggest that plant-derived exosomes are likely safer than those sourced from humans or animals. A representative from The Inkey List explains that the brand’s Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex uses exosomes from the Centella asiatica (cica) plant, which are “cultivated under controlled lab conditions using sustainable tissue cultures, ensuring a level of consistency and purity that human-derived alternatives simply cannot guarantee at this stage.”

But pros also say plant-derived exosome have their own share of pitfalls. Dobos explains that because the type of plant and the growing conditions can vary, the quality of plant-derived exosomes may be inconsistent. “These vesicles tend to be larger than human exosomes, and less is known about their uptake in human systems, so there are still many unknowns with plant-derived exosomes,” she says.

The dermatologists we spoke to are skeptical about how these botanical options interact with our (obviously human) cells. “The benefits of plant-derived exosomes may not be as biologically targeted or effective in activating the same regenerative responses that human-derived stem cell exosomes potentially can,” says Dr. Marmur.

    4. Some exosome products don’t have exosomes at all.

There are also lab-synthesized, “exosome-like” ingredients in play. According to Dr. Marmur, some brands aim to mimic the delivery function of an organically derived exosome through a substitute ingredient. “These systems might be more stable, easier to produce, and safer than using actual biological material,” she says. “But again, the effectiveness of ‘exosome-like’ systems will depend on what’s being delivered, how well it’s absorbed, and whether these alternatives will be able to effectively interact with human cells and produce results.”

The process used to create synthetic exosomes (which are essentially protective transportation vehicles that house ingredients) for use in skin care is “old science,” says Dr. Marmur. She likens lab-synthesized exosomes to formulas with encapsulated ingredients or delayed-release delivery systems. For instance, SkinFix uses biomimetic—that is, human-made technology that mimics things found in nature—exosomes in its Exo + Ectoin Intensive Repair Baume. Dobos says they are liposomes, tiny fat capsules that have been commonly used as delivery systems in cosmetics for about 40 years. According to Krupa Koestline, a cosmetic chemist in Orlando, Florida, synthetic exosomes and liposomes are “90% the same,” with some minor differences. For example, in some cases, Koestline says synthetic exosomes are enhanced with surface proteins to differentiate them from traditional liposomes and improve their targeting.

    5. The benefits you’re seeing from your exosome skin care might be due to other ingredients in the formula.

One major issue with exosome skin care is that it can be unclear whether the intended effects of the product are actually caused by exosomes or by other ingredients. Exosome skin-care products never feature just exosomes. Ingredients that are proven to do things like increase hydration and support collagen production—ceramides, glycerin, peptides, squalene—also commonly make an appearance in these new exosome-infused formulas.

Beyond it not being clear if it’s these tried-and-true ingredients or the newly buzzy exosomes that are doing the heavy lifting, Dobos says the data is lacking on which ingredients pair best with exosomes. She explains that there are limited peer-reviewed studies on the synergy of specific ingredient combinations. And even if exosomes do have a glow-boosting effect, it's unclear how much needs to be added to the formula for it to be effective, according to Dobos.

“If exosomes were pistachios, [these products are] like buying a bag of mixed nuts. There might be some pistachios inside, but they’re only a small fraction of the mix.”

“True exosomes require strict manufacturing standards and release criteria, while most products contain a broader blend of extracellular vesicles and other secretions,” adds Saranya Wyles, MD, PhD, a board-certified dermatologist and researcher at the Mayo Clinic, who specializes in regenerative medicine. “If exosomes were pistachios, [these products are] like buying a bag of mixed nuts. There might be some pistachios inside, but they’re only a small fraction of the mix.”

    6. The FDA has some thoughts about exosome products.

Exosomes have been making headlines in the United States since roughly 2019, when the FDA issued a public safety notification regarding the use of unapproved exosome treatments in clinics across the country, noting that the clinics were advertising unproven claims that these exosome treatments could “prevent, treat, or cure various diseases or conditions.” According to Michele Green, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, this notice was likely in reference to injectable exosomes because they are classified as biological drugs and require FDA approval.

Another FDA consumer alert was released in July 2020, reiterating that the FDA regulates the use of exosomes in regenerative medicine products and that no FDA-approved exosome products exist. A CDC warning regarding stem cell and exosome products (originally published in 2019, but now archived) specifically noted that the FDA has not approved any exosome products for any uses.

That doesn’t mean the companies selling exosome skin-care are inherently breaking any laws or selling products that are unsafe. Topical cosmetics, in general, are not required to be FDA-approved before they are sold unless they contain certain color additives. So, technically, any of your serums and creams that contain hyaluronic acid, peptides, or other active ingredients are probably not FDA-approved either.

    7. Other countries don’t allow the use of animal-derived exosomes in cosmetic products.

While the US hasn’t explicitly banned the use of animal-derived (including human) exosomes, other countries have. In Europe, “guidelines are more stringent. Anything animal- or tissue-derived is not seen as recommended for cosmetic use,” says Dr. Schlesinger, adding that the same goes for Japan. That means the products produced in these countries are made from plants.

    8. Using exosome skin-care products comes with a degree of risk.

Dhaval G. Bhanusali, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that while exosomes have the potential to deliver benefits, they may also lead to unintended effects. Sure, they can support collagen production and reduce inflammation, but in theory, they could also increase inflammation or contribute to disease.

Dr. Schlesinger agrees and emphasizes the need for more research. “Right now, it's not that it's unsafe; we just don't know enough,” he says. “We don’t fully understand what’s in the exosomes or what exactly is causing the effects we’re seeing. From a safety standpoint, some people worry that they could cause cancer or other issues. But the truth is, exosomes are involved in nearly every function in the body, both healthy and unhealthy.”

The bottom line is that, due to limited research on exosome skin care, it's unclear whether there's cause for concern. Allure editors have tested plenty of these new exosome skin-care products without any immediate negative effects, but generally aren’t convinced they’re any better than the stuff already in our routines. If you want to give exosomes a try, you’re probably safe to do so—just don’t expect any skin-care miracles.

Ever since Hilary Duff announced earlier this month that she'd be releasing new music for the first time in a decade, all eyes have been on the former Disney darling turned multi-hyphenate mom. And Duff clearly knows everyone's watching. Not that she even needed a glow-up—the woman is chronically gorgeous—but her front-row-seat sighting at the Fendi show at Milan Fashion Week has everyone talking about how next-level stunning she looks. It's nearly impossible to narrow down the look to one favorite feature, but perhaps the most fun and copyable element is her amazing manicure.

Duff attended the Fendi Spring/Summer 2026 show on Tuesday, September 24, along with a number of other fashion-loving celebrities like Naomi Watts and Shailene Woodley, both of whom wore muted colors and barely-there nail polishes. Duff, on the other hand, seems to have said, “French manicure, please, and don't do any of the usual stuff,” to her as-yet-unidentified nail artist.

Hilary Duff sitting crosslegged in a red top and green skirtPhoto: Getty Images

Each one of the Duff's ballerina-shaped nails has a different unexpected color combo with an especially thick tip: shimmering gold with a terracotta tip, silver with a white tip, rosy rust with a darker burgundy tip, the palest of silvery lavenders with a pastel green tip, and so on. The manicure is complemented by a big, blue Fendi statement ring.

Hilary Duff's Color Block French Manicure Breaks Every Rule — See PhotosPhoto: Getty Images

Although her outfit didn't perfectly match the colors in her manicure, it echoed the playful “color theory be damned” spirit. She paired a satiny, pale green pencil skirt with a bright red, oversized top, and a bubblegum pink straw bag.

The rest of her glam was on the more subtle side, but it still wowed big-time. Hairstylist Rio Sreedharan gave Duff voluminous, loose waves that framed her glowing, brown-toned makeup by Nikki Wolff.

As much as I wish I could wake up with those waves tomorrow, more realistically, I cannot wait to start pairing random colors together and throw the rules out the window when it comes to how thick or thin a French tip needs to be, and I thank Hilary Duff for what will be endless inspiration this fall.

Here's the thing about a great set of bangs: they can do it all. When your bangs fit your face and your style just so, everything seems more elevated, even a humble white T-shirt and jeans ensemble. Just ask Demi Moore, who relied on fringe to help her craft her character in the new Gucci short film, The Tiger.

Moore plays a character named Barbara Gucci in the film, which was directed by Spike Jonze and Halina Reijn to introduce the Demna era at the Italian fashion house. She turned to hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos to help bring Barbara Gucci to life, and that required bangs. The bangs were a collaborative event between the filmmakers, Moore, Giannetos, and Demna, Gucci's creative director. “Demna had the idea of the ‘Gucci bangs,’” Giannetos shared. “And [of course] he always has the right vision.” After the group agreed on the fringe, Giannetos got to work, crating a set of brow-skimming curtain bangs that blended beautifully into Moore's signature long dark hair.

The bangs looked effortlessly cool with Moore's heading-to-set outfit of a T-shirt and denim, but they transformed into something completely different when she got into costume and character. Demi Moore the person's bangs were a little bit rock 'n' roll, but Barbara Gucci's bangs were more polished, hitting right at the brow and brushed straight across her forehead with piecey separation, swapping the undone look for a “ladies who lunch” aesthetic—especially with the addition of a red Gucci jacket. One set of bangs, two completely different vibes.

    Instagram content

In the film, Moore's character Barbara, the “Head of Gucci International and Chairman of California,” is throwing a glamorous party for her family, but there's a lot going on under the surface, and things start to get a little… messy.

Moore's bangs may have been a one-time thing for the movie—she's back to the fringe-free Demi once more—but if she ever wants to bring them back, we're 100 percent on board!

Why it's worth it: If you have mature or sensitive skin that’s easily aggravated by too many products, RoC Retinol Correxion Serum is one that dermatologists say people stick with. “The texture is lightweight and smooth, which makes it especially nice for mature or drier skin types that don’t tolerate heavier or sticky products,” says Erum Ilyas, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in King of Prussia, PA. Alongside pure encapsulated retinol for gradual delivery, the formula includes glycerin for hydration, antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E to brighten and protect, and soothing agents like allantoin and bisabolol to help calm potential irritation. It also contains zinc, copper, and magnesium—minerals that support skin’s overall health. “This serum offers the most consistent results I see in smoother texture and improvement in overall brightness and evenness. It’s a great starting point for beginners, but it also works well for long-time users,” says Dr. Ilyas.

    Naturium

    Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.15%

    $35

Why it's worth it: Naturium’s Retinaldehyde Cream Serum has a silky, cream-serum texture that feels both lightweight and nourishing, making it easy to incorporate into your nightly routine. It comes in three strengths—0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.15%—so you can start slow and increase as your skin adjusts. The star ingredient is retinaldehyde (often called retinal), a form of vitamin A that’s one quick conversion step away from retinoic acid. Because of that, retinal can work more quickly and more efficiently to smooth fine lines and wrinkles than retinol. To balance out the potency, the formula is infused with skin-loving extras, including glycerin for hydration, peptides and amino acids to support a stronger, healthier skin barrier, and antioxidants such as tocopherol (vitamin E) and pomegranate extract to defend against environmental stress.

“Naturium makes some of the chicest, sensorially-pleasing skin care in the affordable-priced market, and the Retinaldehyde Cream Serum is proof. I've been using this cute tube since it first launched with the 0.05% concentration. Since then, it has expanded to 0.10% and 0.15%, and my skin has become more comfortable with all sorts of vitamin A derivatives, so I'm moving up to the higher doses. The punchy neon-yellow-green formula feels like a gel-serum, so it absorbs almost immediately, and it's just all-around refreshing to apply. Because my nighttime skin-care routine can get pretty long, I really like how low-key and layerable this one is. My entire face gets product love, but I do like spending a little extra time on my forehead (hello, faint lines). Does it really do anything? Who knows, but I like believing that it will make a difference in the long run.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: If uneven texture and fine lines are your main concerns, La Roche-Posay’s R Retinol Cream is a derm-approved way to tackle both without overwhelming sensitive skin. “This serum combines pure retinol with retinyl linoleate, which gives a gradual-release effect that’s less irritating for sensitive skin,” Hannah Kopelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. To further boost results, the formula also includes lipo-hydroxy acid, a gentle exfoliant that helps smooth skin’s surface and enhance radiance without the sting of harsher acids. This combination makes it a more approachable option for those nervous about irritation. “It’s a good choice for someone newer to retinol but ready for more than an entry-level formula,” says Dr. Kopelman.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What step should retinol be in my routine?

Retinol products should be applied at night, after cleansing and before moisturizing. If you’re layering serums, apply it after lighter, water-based ones but before heavier creams or oils. Another derm-loved trick for minimizing irritation is the sandwich method: Apply a base layer of moisturizer first, then your retinol, and seal it in with another layer of moisturizer. “Studies have shown that this base layer of moisturizer does not dilute or reduce the efficacy of the retinoid, but instead helps with tolerability,” Dr. Marchbein previously told Allure. Regardless of the method you use, always follow up with SPF in the morning, as retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

For our list of the best drugstore retinols, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified derms and K-beauty experts. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

If it's October 1, we know Megan Thee Stallion is doing two things: wearing a pumpkin on her head and serving up Halloween nail art inspo. No, seriously. She has truly committed to this bit. Just check out her jack-o-lantern and manicure combo from last year and the year before. And this year, she's back again with not only a creepy-yet-cute Halloween manicure but a new pumpkin piercing, too.

You read that right: Megan Thee Stallion posted a carousel of photos to her Instagram grid showing her at a piercing studio, getting what is essentially an eyebrow piercing, even though noggin gourd has no discernible eyebrows. And yet, the dangling crossing looks totally fierce, especially with all of the other gems she's wearing with her casual, cropped white tee, jeans, and slouchy boots.

Thankfully, a couple of the photos give us a clear shot of this year's highly anticipated October 1 manicure, and it's actually a bit more subdued than in years past. (She has yet to reveal which of her nail artists is behind the design.) They're short and squared off, with a few different themes. Some nails are painted black with red dots; others have a traditional French manicure combo of a sheer pink base with white tips, plus a red dot.

However, most adorable—or horrifying, depending on your personal phobias—nails in this manicure are the ones with clown faces on them. There's nothing inherently frightening about them: a white base with a simple smile, star-shaped eyes, and a classic clown nose. But that won't ease the fears of anyone who categorizes clowns as monsters.

For those of us who are comfortable with clowns and ready to start celebrating the spooky spirit of this month, we're definitely adding this to our list of Halloween nail art ideas to bring to the salon.
